PASSIVELY SAFE LIGHTING SCHEME

In Sunderland the last two roads to see the light in our Core Investment Programme were the A1231 and A182. These roads are high speed strategic routes and were previously unlit. The location, speed of traffic and changes in legislation required a new approach to be taken to the lighting solution, and with safety given paramount importance, it was decided to use Passively Safe equipment.

The term Passively Safe refers to the ability of the column to yield and isolate electrical power during collision impact, reducing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and recovery crews. Constructed from aluminium, the columns are low maintenance and lightweight, meaning they are easier and safer to install using existing methods and equipment.

Illuminated with over 750 Passively Safe columns and utilising Passively Safe signage poles, this section of work represents the largest ''''one off'''' installation of this type of equipment in the UK.
