Provided below are answers to some of the frequently asked questions we receive in relation to our street lighting activities.

  • How many street lights is your local authority responsible for?

    There are currently 49,347 lighting units which are the responsibility of the local authority and are managed/maintained by Aurora.

  • How many lights are switched off all night?

    Sunderland City Council does not have any street lighting units that are switched off all night.

  • How many street lights are dimmed during the night?

    As of January 2022, there are 47,391 units that are dimmed at various stages during the night.

  • Is Sunderland City Council planning to switch off or dim street lights in the future?

    There are no plans to switch off street lighting in the future.

    However, there is an ongoing project that  will convert the remaining non-dimmed street lights to dimmed LED units. This is due to be completed in 2022.

  • How many street lights were switched off and dimmed in each year from 2015?

    2015 : 218 units

    2016 : 3,106 units

    2017 : 20,556 units

    2018 : 31,051 units

    2019 : 38,812 units

    2020 : 47,285 units

    2021 : 49,347 units
